Fort Myers Real Estate
Florida became a US Territory in 1821 and the settlers ask for protection from the Seminoles. Fort Myers was built along the Caloosahatchee River as once of the bases of operation during the Seminole Indiana Wars. Fort Myers was named in honor of the Colonel Abraham C. Myers, the son-in-law of the commander of Fort Brooke in Tampa.
Wood from the fort was used to build some of the first buildings in what would become down town Fort Myers. By 1885 Thomas Alva Edison was captivated with what he saw in Fort Myers and built his home and laboratory. He became Fort Myers' most famous resident and a strong force in its growth and development. Do not miss the tour of Edison's
home and laboratory. Among his lesser known inventions are wax paper, tin foil, the talking doll mimegraph and dictating machine. Also mucilage, the sticky stuff on postage stamps, envelopes and labels is on his list of inventions.
The Edison Festival of Light each year is a must. Make sure do not miss it.
Henry Ford was good friend of Mr. Edison and would sometimes go off on a camping trip or a drive to Estero. By 1914 the first Ford Dealership was opened in Fort Myers.
Fortunately, the older downtown area and the City of Fort Myers historic districts have retained its charm, and proper preservation measures are in place to ensure that charm will be treasured for generations to come.
